Pevonia - skin concerns during pregnancy

Most mothers-to-be will notice varying changes in their body, most of which are temporary and will pass once the baby is born.

What skin concerns am I likely to face during pregnancy and how can I try to avoid them?

You will notice that your skin will become quite unpredictable particularly with degrees of sensitivity. Your skin is likely to become more reactive to increases in temperature but also perhaps to products (some of which you may have been using for years).

Other skin concerns can be as severe as cystic acne due to the imbalance of hormones. On the odd occasion your skin can become the best it’s ever been and you will be left with a healthy glow.

Our recommendation is preventative maintenance; have regular facials that will cleanse thoroughly as well as soothe and strengthen your skin. Pevonia’s home care will ensure that you eliminate any harmful ingredients that can have an adverse effect on your skin.

Q. My mother experienced very bad stretch marks am I likely to have them too?

Stretch marks are usually hereditary and will be passed down the family tree. However due to a lack of elastin in your skin (a protein found in your body that provides elasticity) it is likely to stretch and not spring back into shape once you have given birth. Also, your own size compared to your baby’s weight may not be in proportion and therefore put a strain on your body creating stretch marks.

To help strengthen your skin, massage Pevonia’s Micro-Emulsified Massage Oil Anti-Stress onto the body day and night, from the beginning to the end of your pregnancy, we recommend you use Pevonia’s Preserve Body Moisturiser or Dry Oil Body Moisturiser once you have become a mum.

Q. Am I allowed to sun bathe whilst pregnant?

It is suggested not to sun bathe outdoors or have sun beds. This is because whilst pregnant you are more likely to suffer with increased pigmentation called chloasma as well as heightened sensitivity resulting in prickly heat. However, if you know that you will be outside in the sun you must ensure that you wear a sun protection of at least SPF 30 and reapply regularly.

Q. I have heard a rumour that I should avoid using essential oils, is this true?

It is important to be aware of essential oils as some benefits are to stimulate or to detoxify as well as the concentration being too high for you. Though there is no evidence of essential oils harming you or your baby, it is a potential risk.

As an extra measure of caution we recommend not using any product which contains Salicylic acid on pregnant women.

Salicylic is not contra indicated during pregnancy only due to a measure of ‘extra’ caution. In reality, nothing has yet been fully proven about the uncertain safety of topical use of this acid on human skin, as tests have not been completed. It has been proven that Salicylic can cause malformations in animals but only with high doses.

The following products all contain salicylic acid. The products highlighted in green are alternatives that can be used as a safe option instead –
